Photo’s are very helpful when observations must be linked with correct nest-ID’s. Determine the correct nest-ID’s is essential for a good monitoring programme.

The photo above was taken in January 2010 from nest 229 at Zaarderheiken. While entering the dimentions in the database and checking it’s exact location in Google Earth it was clear that there was a mixup somewhere. The photo below shows also nest 229, but tho years earlier. It is clear that these photo’s do not show the same nest, but these photo’s were taken just a few meters from each other. A difficult task is to determine what observation was linked to the wrong nest-ID. Ro maybe it is a completely nes nest.

Since 2009 GPS is used in the field. This tool should help preventing mixups like this one in the future.

Piquets are a very useful tool. They are used in several ways:

Detailed topographic maps, GPS and last but not least: proper notes!

GPS is an unmissable tool in the field. Determine the exact position of a nest loction and marking it in Goole Earth is only possible with a combination from GPS, fieldnotes and detailed maps. Each time a nest is visited the GPS coordinates are registered. This guarantees that the observation is linked to the correct nest-ID.

All the observations during filedwork are documented as detailed as possible. Once home the notes and information are entered into the ant-maps database and Google-Earth.

One of the most important tasks during the data-entry is ensuring the integrity of data . Large research-sites like Ravensheide and Zaarderheiken are monitored for more than 10 years now. In these years the vegetation changed, nests are founded or they disappear. Sometimes new nests are founded just a few meters from another one. Finding the correct corresponding nest-ID under these conditions the most difficult, but also most essential part of the registration.

Ensuring data integrity starts in the field. There are several tools to help with determine the correct nest-ID.

1. GPS : determine the coördinates eacht time as close as possible and check these with the fieldnotes and the Google-Earth maps.
2. Camera: Making photo’s from each nest every visit. Afterwards the photo’s van be compared. Trees and other objects help determine the correct nest-ID.
3. Piquets: Piquets with scale markings help determine the correct nest dimentions. This way it is possible to re-check nest sizes afterwards.
4. Ant-maps DB: The database is checking input continuously during data entry.

Ant-maps is een website over mieren en kaarten. Ant is het Engelse woord voor mier en maps betekent kaarten. Mieren zijn sociale insecten. Ze wonen samen in hun nest en werken samen aan het voortbestaan van hun kolonie. Centraal in een mierenkolonie staan een of meerdere koninginnen. Zij worden verzorgd en beschermd door het mierenvolk. Eens per jaar vliegen nieuwe koninginnen en gevleugelde mannetjes uit. Dit heet de bruidsvlucht. De bevruchte koninginnen stichten daarna nieuwe kolonies en nieuwe mierenvolken. De nesten of kolonies van bosmieren zijn goede voorbeelden van zulke kolonies.

In Nederland komen verschillende soorten beschermde bosmieren voor. De kale rode bosmier (Formica polyctena) en de behaarde rode bosmier (Formica rufa). Zij bouwen grote nesten van soms meer dan een meter hoog. Daarin leven soms wel 30.000 mieren en meerdere koninginnen samen. Het “mierenproject“, dat deze website presenteert, richt zich op het in kaart brengen van deze mierenhopen. Meestal in het bos, maar soms ook in de stad of langs de weg.

De mierenkolonies van bosmieren zijn vaak mooie en herkenbare heuvels van naalden in het bos. Maar wat zo bijzonder is is dat de mieren van het ene naar het andere nest lopen. Bijvoorbeeld om voedsel te halen of te brengen. De kale en de behaarde bosmieren werken op die manier zelfs samen. Een groep nesten dat zo met mierenpaden met elkaar verbonden is noemt men een superkolonie. Dit mierenproject zoekt speciaal naar dit soort superkolonies en vergelijkt die met elkaar. De grootste kan wel 30 hectare groot zijn, kleinere slechts enkele hectare groot. Een van de mooiste superkolonies in de omgeving van Venlo vind je in het Floriadebos. Geen wonder dat er op deze website veel aandacht voor de bescherming van deze superkolonie. En gelukkig met succes!
