What the biggest ant in the world?

The biggest ant in the world is not realy a sexy one. It does not have strong legs, giant jaws and a huge sting. The giant ant you would expect by hearing ‘largest ant’ does not exist. Sorry for that.

The giant ant could be the one you expect, but the giant ants Formicium giganteum and Titanomyrma lubei lived 46 million  years ago. The largest ants from this time you find in Africa. These are the Dorylinae ants. The males grow to 2.5 centimeters long, like on the image. But their queens are much larger.  The queens ar real egg laying machines called dichthadiigyne. They grow to an enourmous size, as large as a small finger. They lay their eggs in a e few days, between 3 and 4 million. No wonder they people call them sausage fly! See the movie below!
